Now that the trial is over and things are back to normal, would you like to celebrate our one-month bond anniversary? It's not the exact date, because of the mess with the trials, but I thought it could be nice to do something special. If you want.
You're so sweet. I'd love to. Do you have something in mind?
There's a lot of empty shelves at my place. I've been thinking about displaying interesting looking minerals from around Folkmore, and I hear you're something of an expert. How about a rock-hunting date as part of our celebration?
Look who's talking. You won't hear me complaining, though.
I have a few ideas, actually, I wanted to see what you thought about it. There's a lovely restaurant in Wintermute, called Cutting Edge. Very fancy, they say, with a very nice view of the mountain or the starry sky at night. They have vegetarian dishes too, I checked.
Minerals? Oh, now you're speaking my language. I didn't know you liked those too. I was worried about boring you to death by talking about them. Going rock hunting sounds like a fantastic way to start the day. Maybe in Cruel Summer? Or you had some other location in mind?
The restaurant sounds wonderful. I've never been there before, it would be nice to go with you. You had more ideas too?
You could never bore me, I'd enjoy hearing anything and everything you know about minerals. Though I rarely speak of my interests because of similar worries, so it isn't your fault you weren't aware of my geological interests until now.
You're the expert. Tell me where to go and I'll take us there. As for how, that's a surprise. I hope you'll like it.
[ He's still feeling a bit emotionally raw from recent incidents, which remains clear to Jayce through their bond, but he's willing to accept this olive branch and see where it takes them. Really, they're long overdue for a proper date, anyway, and it will help against his insecurity that has him worried Jayce may no longer have enough time or space for him in his life as a partner. ]
I've never been there before either, which is why I wanted to go with you. How about some dancing afterward? I might not know how to cook, but I do not know how to follow a rhythm.
You have so much patience. Don't give me free rein, I really can talk for hours about rocks. You should tell me more about your geological interests, for sure. Did that hobby start here or back in your homeworld?
OH? Mysterious. I like it. I'll send you the address.
[ Jayce feels guilty as well about how things happened and wants to make sure K feels cherished. He's been a little worried, not just because of the accidental emotional pain he caused K but also because his partner has been in physical pain as well. ]
Sounds perfect. Dress for the rock hunting, I can bring us back to change for the restaurant and dancing. And anything else we might want to do.
[ Because he doesn't want to pass up any opportunity to see Jayce all fancied up, of course. As for "anything else", he already knows he'd like to cook something special for Jayce later on, maybe a nice dinner once they're home for the day. ]
And I can really listen to you talk for hours about the things you're passionate about.
A bit of both. The curiosity was always there, but opportunities to indulge it were very limited in my home universe. Difficult to pursue hobbies when I was expected to remain available to my handler at all times. I'm really looking forward to getting to do this with you.
When you're ready to go meet me on the roof. Let's say in an hour, if that's enough time for you.

K will be up there long before the agreed upon time in order to perform a thorough check of his spinner. It's already been flown before in Folkmore, so he knows it's in good working order and he's diligently kept up its maintenance, but he's taking extra precautions for the sake of his soon-to-be passenger. Precious cargo. Putting Jayce at risk is unacceptable.
The sight and sound that will greet Jayce once he makes his way up is that of K's spinner, idling, the scissor doors both open. K is perched in the pilot seat, for once dressed more casually than usual though still in several layers, heedless of the temperature, and he's in the process of triple checking the flight harness connectors for both seats. The spinner's interior bears little resemblance to that of a traditional car, and more closely resembles an aircraft cockpit: flight sticks in place of a steering wheel, an array of flight controls and sensors and all kinds of built-in forensics equipment related to his policework, which are currently set to monitor weather conditions and by default display his identification as an officer of the LAPD. His spinner unfortunately doesn't boast the improved safety features of newer models — only human officers are issued those — but Jayce will find no finer pilot than the one who's motioning him to get in with a smile.
"Watch your head getting in," he warns, knowing Jayce will need to duck in order to clear the low door since K himself has to. And if he happens to lean in close enough, he might notice K hasn't gone completely casual for this part of their date — he's wearing a faint, pleasant-smelling cologne. "Have everything you need? I prepared a bag of equipment a guide recommended, just in case." Because he really does take this rock hunting business seriously.
Edited (can't forget the cologne :3) 2023-05-23 08:49 (UTC)
[ Jayce easily agrees to the request, knowing very well how important it is to come prepared when you're about to purposely get lost in a desert. ]
Will do. We will probably need a quick shower too, so being able to change before dinner will be ideal. [ He wants to look good for K, and make the evening special. They could even shower together, to save water and all that. It's not like they have any issues with water in Folkmore, and K probably doesn't sweat, but it's as good an excuse as any to get a little bit more intimate. ]
That goes both ways. I like listening to what you have to say about anything you might like, from jazz to deductive reasoning. [ At the mention of how little chance K had in his world to grow and be truly himself, Jayce's expression falls a little. Through their bond, K might pick up anger directed at his handler, but also feelings of sympathy and devotion towards him. ]
I understand. Luckily, here, that's no longer a problem, and I'm also looking forward to our date. It's about time. We can do anything you want. You can always talk to me about anything, I promise.
I'll see you in an hour. Take care, K.ç

When Jayce meets K on the roof 50 minutes later, he's wearing long sleeves, protective gloves, and boots perfect for climbing rocks. Jayce keeps the heavy stuff in his bag of holding: bottles of water, a couple of flashlights, his rock hammer, brushes, a penknife, and some more mining equipment. The moment he notices the strange-looking vehicle, his eyes widen, and he walks over to K at a quicker pace, interest piqued.
"Oh, woah woah, that looks amazing. " He stares at the open doors in wonder, he's never seen that design before, and then beams at K. He looks so good sitting there in comfortable clothes that, as soon as Jayce is close enough, he places a quick kiss on the corner of the man's mouth. "Hi! Is this your car? It looks so different from the ones I've seen. How did you get it on the roof? It never occurred to me that a vehicle could have doors that open this way, does it have a special type of hinge point?"
Jayce has one million questions and then some, and he's not exactly staying still as he talks but moving around the spinner to give it a proper full look before he ducks and gets inside, following K's advice. Then he lets out a few soft 'ohhh' and 'aaah what's that? And what does this other thing to?', and has to stop himself more than once from touching a specially interesting panel or button, reaching out, and then pulling his hand away.
The cologne scent doesn't go unnoticed, and Jayce tears his eyes away from the spinner's display to throw K a thoroughly content smile.
"Now, this is a surprise. You look fantastic, by the way." Jayce then pats the small pouch attached to his belt. "Got everything I need right there, even my hammer in case it's needed."
The little kiss makes K's expression light up with a surprised, happy smile. There's an urge to lean in for a proper one, but then Jayce is already gone, circling around outside the spinner to get a better look. His enthusiasm and excitement are charming. Hopefully he'll enjoy flying just as much.
"Technically more aircraft than car," K replies. "I'm a pilot. And the scissor doors are useful for maneuvering and landing in tight spaces." Once Jayce is seated, the doors begin to slowly close, providing him with a first hand look at the operation of the hinges. K also helps him with the flight harness to ensure he's fully strapped in.
He takes the time to answer each of Jayce's questions about the functions, going into as much detail as Jayce wants. They have time. Luckily the main flight controls are all on K's side, so any poking around Jayce might do isn't a big deal — and K even encourages him to fiddle with the displays if he wants to, explaining the different modes and what his spinner is capable of scanning for. It would be beneficial for Jayce to familiarise himself so he can track whatever types of minerals he'd like to collect.
"So do you," K replies to the compliment, reaching to squeeze Jayce's hand as his expression softens with fondness. "Thank you for thinking of me." For making time for him. With how much of a social butterfly Jayce is and now having multiple other partners, K doesn't imagine it's easy, and there's that insecure part of him that wonders if he wouldn't rather be spending his time with Mel or Viktor. The three share so much history that it makes K feel like an outsider at times.
Ah, but he doesn't want to ruin their time together with his brooding. Pushing those thoughts aside, he initiates the spinner's vertical takeoff, handling the controls with an ease that seems second-nature. It's a smooth ascent, the spinner's slow rise keeping the g-force to a minimum, at least at first — the mark of an experienced pilot. Then he accelerates, and the ground rapidly falls away beneath them.
"Doing okay?" he asks as he looks back to Jayce for his reaction. He knows Runeterra has airships and presumably Jayce has been on one before, but he just wants to make sure this is a good experience for him.
Jacye catches on to K's surprise through their bond and glances inside the spinner at K to wink at him. He plans for more kisses to happen during the day if K allows it, and given the expression of the other man, he's hopeful that his boyfriend won't say no.
"Even better. I should have noticed that you're a pilot before, you're very skilled with your hands, shame on me." He reaches to the side and gives K's thigh a light squeeze while he looks up at the closing door, mesmerized and studying the mechanism. You can take the inventor out of his workshops, but you can't take his love for technology out of him.
He leans back and behaves when K securely straps him in and gives him a grateful smile. It doesn't go unnoticed that this might be for his sake, or K's other human acquaintance that he might take on a flight. K is the most sturdy man Jayce has ever known, and might not have much need for seatbelts.
He's also endlessly patient, something Jayce considers himself very lucky for, as he gets all his questions answered and even permission to press some buttons and check some panels with the eagerness of a kid on Christmas morning.
"This thing is fantastic. if we had it back home, it would have made it so much easier to find the right crystals to develop Hextech. I had to travel around and even get lost in a few desert caves to find the right ones." He hates about 90% of the things they do in K's world because people are assholes to androids like him, but Jayce can't deny that their tech is fascinating.
"I think of you constantly, and I want us to spend more time together." He squeezes K's hand back but doesn't want to distract him a lot while he's about to fly them around. "I was thinking that perhaps we could spend more time together in each other's apartments too? You could stay on mine, or I could come to yours for a few days."
A little while ago, when K was turned into a kid during one of the trials, Jayce hadn't missed the pang of disappointment he showed through their bond when he learned that they weren't always together. He wanted to amend that, and he also wanted to actually live with K as well, at least from time to time, if the other man would have him. The spinner getting into the air with a vertical takeoff is another surprise that has Jayce letting out another soft 'ohhh' of admiration.
"The ships in my world can't move like this. Even with hextech technology, they soar in the sky like naval ships but not vertically. You're a very good pilot." He can tell immediately that K has done this before, possibly many times, and Jaye isn't experiencing any sort of whiplash.
"Wonderful." He reassures him with a smile, looking at K and then at the view ahead of them. "You could go anywhere with this. Did you ever try to fly past the mountains? See if there's something behind them and where Folkmore ends?
More kisses will always be welcome, even if K is still a bit shy about initiating. There's that damaged part of him that's not fully convinced his presence, affection, or love are truly wanted, though it's becoming easier to ignore such doubts on days like this one.
"If it's ever possible to return to your home universe with you, consider yourself free to make use of anything I have. Here, too," he adds. "Even if it's just for rock collecting." If it makes Jayce happy or his life easier, K's all in favour of it. And of course it's a nice bonus that using his spinner's equipment would also probably mean spending more time together. Speaking of which—
He glances at Jayce with surprise plain in his expression at the suggestion of occasionally living together, a privilege he'd (mistakenly, he's realising) assumed was reserved for Mel alone.
"I'd love that," he replies, an understatement judging by the rush of elation Jayce will be able to feel through their bond. "I've wanted to suggest as much before, I just... didn't want to impose on you." And he'd worried he'd be putting Jayce in an awkward position of having to turn him down if he'd asked.
He yearns to build a life and future with his two partners in Folkmore, since it's the only opportunity he'll have for it, but he's also carefully mindful of the limitations of polyamory and tries his best to fit his wants and needs into the space he's been allowed. He's happy to accept whatever Jayce is comfortable sharing with him. And with the eventual disappearance of Joi in the coming weeks, he'll be more grateful than ever for any company.
"I haven't tested it everywhere yet, but in the places I did, there seems to be invisible barriers preventing us from going beyond a certain point." Which hadn't been new to him, he'd found similar boundaries in both Deerington and Trench before. "We could test it more later, if you want to. Probably get a good view of the stars if nothing else." It could be quite romantic, he thinks.
With the speeds the spinner is capable of, it isn't a terribly long trip to reach Cruel Summer, even with K intentionally taking scenic routes at a leisurely pace. He's in no hurry; being able to share the wonderful sights of Folkmore in this unique way with Jayce is well worth savouring. Once they're over the desert, though, he makes a few adjustments to the displays so Jayce will be able to see all the different inorganic chemical compositions present in the ground below — it's a veritable treasure trove of minerals.
Jayce would like it if K started things, but he understands it's not easy for the other man. He gets these lingering worries and doubts through their bond and sometimes K's body language. He does his best to interpret them right, to try and figure out if the reticence is because he is making K uncomfortable, or because his boyfriend wants more and doesn't know how to ask for it. Sometimes Jayce feels like he's failing him, so he wants to do better, get better at the whole dating thing.
"That would be a nice present, but the only one I'd really like to keep, if such a thing is possible, is you." He doesn't know how people can return to their home universe, or even if it's possible to take anything with them. But if there comes a day when Thirteen allows it, K tagging along is all Jayce would care about. K deserves a full, better life, treated like an equal by everyone. He grins too, however, looking playful.
"But if one day you can teach me how to drive the spinner on my own, I wouldn't say no."
He's all about fancy tech, and this vehicle is very useful, very sleek. Sexy, like K. The surprised look earns K a soft smile from Jayce, as if to reassure him that he is serious. None of his partners has more privileges, so call it something, than others in Jayce's mind.
"Great. And you're never imposing on me, love. You're allowed to ask for what you want." Jayce says that firmly, still smiling, making a point to return the exalted feeling through their connection. "You'll be subjected more often to my terrible cooking, alas. Sorry, no take-backs."
One day he needs to have a conversation with K about how arguing between them can happen, and that it won't be the end of the world. He had disagreed with both Viktor and Mel in the past about things, and while it was hardly enjoyable, in the end, their relationship also became stronger as a result. They developed a deeper understanding of their feelings, which helped with trust. That can wait, however, today they should focus only on having fun.
"Invisible barriers...how interesting. I did ask some of the locals about what was beyond Folkmore, and they almost looked confused at the question. They say there was simply nothing."
Going by Jayce's expression, he calls that bullshit. It simply can not be, it doesn't make sense for a whole planet ( or whatever plane of existence they are living on) to be so limited. After all, once they had dragons visiting, they must have come from somewhere. "Maybe, yeah, that sounds pretty. I just don't want to get us into trouble today, though. Not when we have lovely plans ahead of us."
Jayce pats K's thighs a couple of times, and then simply leaves his hand there as they fly, resting on the man's leg. Leaning back on his chair, Jayce appreciates the unique views, commits them to memory, and then leans forward to get a better look at the displays.
"Ooooh, there's more than I was expecting. Do you have a preference for where we should start? Maybe the rocky mountains on the east? Those could also provide us some shade while we explore."
