[ K's indeed home and not busy, beyond trying to alleviate his unusual restlessness. Over the last few hours he's cycled through editing photos from the Libra Station for the museum, marking passages from one of his favourite books to share with Connor later, preparing sheet music of various Lord of the Rings songs, trying a new recipe, and eventually tinkering with his spinner that's parked to the side of his house — which is where he currently is. He leans out of the driver's side open door to see who's knocking. ]
Hey. Ready for your next lesson? [ He assumes that's why Royce has stopped by. ]
[ He catches the sound of tinkering before K speaks up, and glances over to the side of the house as K leans out. Royce reaches up to push his hood back carefully. ]
Yeah. [ And he wanted to see K, but he's not sure how to phrase that without being weird. He just likes their conversations, that's all. ] Don't know if you drink coffee, but I got some for you.
[ Looking skyward, K says: ] Return. [ Then while he briefly scrolls through the aerial photos on his phone that he'd been taking via the pilotfish drone, the drone in question drifts down to return to its dock within the roof of the car. Climbing out of the it, he locks it back up and then goes to let Royce inside, holding the door for him. ]
Thanks. That was nice of you. [ It's the sort of thoughtfulness that he's clearly still surprised to ever be the recipient of. ]
Not a problem. [ Royce says, ducking inside. He was momentarily distracted by the drone - he's not sure he's seen anything like it. Carefully, he hands over the coffee to K. It's just a regular one, with a bit of cream and sugar, since Royce doesn't know what K likes. ]
Is that - a car? [ He's also never seen a car in person either. ]
[ As it so happens, K's still figuring out what he likes, too. A basic coffee isn't a bad place to start; he curiously tries some before answering. ]
Yes. Mine from my homeworld. I've been experimenting with the aerial photography.
[ He motions for Royce to have a seat on the couch or in one of the chairs, and heads for the piano himself. Setting the coffee on the small table beside the piano, he takes a seat on the bench and begins sorting through the neatly handwritten sheet music to prepare. There's several versions of every song by this point — very simplified ones that are just the bare-bones melodies to start with, the same but with the basic bass lines added, then the full arrangements. ]
I would be utterly lost in your homeworld. [ Royce says, almost amused. He sits in one of the chairs, watching K. ] And that is a lot of music. You must have high hopes for my abilities.
Mm. At least one of us does. [ Royce pls. ] And I might feel the same in your homeworld. But I think I'd enjoy learning to sword fight. [ Presumably a highly useful skill to cultivate in a medieval fantasy world. ]
How do you like flying? [ He glances over at Royce with a raised eyebrow as he asks it. Assuming he's even gotten to experience flight in some form before. Zero-g in space doesn't really count, K figures. ] If you're interested, I could give you a ride sometime. [ You know. In the spinner. ]
[ He looks amused at the thought of K swordfighting - seems silly, when K came from a world with guns and high tech weaponry. As for the rest, he raises an eyebrow, and wonders if K knows how suggestive his questions are sometimes.
A beat, and then: ] Maybe. I've never been in a car before. The idea is - intimidating.
[ Any sort of going faster than a horse and Royce will die. Basically. ]
Not that I don't trust your ability to control the thing. But it is a large piece of metal going at incredible speeds.
[ K does seem to realise after the fact how his question sounded, ducking his head with a slight smile. And since Royce is making it so easy. ] I could go slow. Like larghissimo — as slow as possible. [ There's a musical term for him to learn. ] Since it'd be your first time.
[ After a second he lowers his hands to the keys and begins playing a short medley of several of the more notable songs, to give Royce an idea of how they sound; the choice of which to learn first will be left up to him.
While playing K pauses a couple times throughout to white-out and rewrite notes on the sheet music. He's done everything by ear — mistakes may happen. ]
[ Larghissimo. He keeps that in mind, and just laughs into his coffee when K pushes the innuendo just a little further. Gods. He's going to answer, but then K starts to play, and Royce forgets what he's going to say in favor of listening. He really loves the sound of piano, and he really loves this soundtrack. He's in a good mood today emotionally, so the music doesn't hit him the same way it might when he's upset and watching the movie to comfort himself, but he's still clearly into it.
Royce listens quietly, eyes closed, and when K is finished, Royce sets his coffee down to applaud lightly, a small smile on his face. ]
You are very talented. [ Royce tells him. ] I hope this didn't take up too much of your time. You're already putting aside so much to teach me in the first place.
[ The praise embarrasses him, but in a good way if his smile is any indication. ] I've enjoyed doing it. The music's very memorable. [ And it's plainly obvious how much Royce enjoys the music, too, which is what makes the effort well worth it. After what happened on the space station and with the Norfinbury flashback (he has a feeling it wasn't an isolated incident), he figures Royce can probably use more pleasant things to keep his mind occupied with. ]
I wasn't sure if you'd want the songs from the credits...
[ But he transcribed those, too. Because he likes the song in particular, he demonstrates with the fully arranged Into the West. One he's played quite a bit already; he doesn't need to pause to fix the sheet music this time. ]
[ Royce is happy enough to listen to that arrangement, too. It's beautiful, and Royce is already finding he can't wait to be able to do this himself. Not that he hates K playing music for him, because he definitely doesn't. He just thinks it maybe feels different to actually play the music and lose yourself in it. K's right, whether Royce realizes it or not - he needs distractions from the horrific memories of snow. ]
I like that one. [ Royce says, as K's winding down. ] But - the music that plays when they're in the Shire is my favorite.
[ He shifts, and rubs at the back of his neck, almost embarrassed. ] It's in the background of a few of Sam and Frodo's talks. It's a good song.

[ With a nod, K shuffles through the sheet music to find the pages he'd simply titled "Hobbits / The Shire" (two versions — the simplified melody with a basic bass line, and the fully arranged version) and sets them up on the music stand. After collecting the rest of the pages and his coffee, he gets up from the bench. ]

It's subdued and doesn't quite make it to his face, necessarily, but he's relaxed and seems to be happy that he can hear actual music instead of discordant piano sounds. He has a lot of trouble with the sections where he has to press multiple keys at the same time, but he makes his way through the song.
And when he finishes his first slow, unsteady playthrough, he actually smiles. ]
