[ K's grateful this is occurring over text. It allows him time to absorb and process the information and at least attempt to untangle his own feelings on the matter before replying.
What Sims has done and continues to do is unforgivable, but he doesn't disregard the information Martin's provided him. The explanation of what becoming an avatar entails is especially disconcerting — because he doesn't need altered programming to do exactly that; anything his handler orders him to do, he will do it. No matter how "bad." It's an extremely uncomfortable parallel. ]
Varian is a skilled alchemist. It's likely he might be capable of replicating the potion. I'd suggest contacting him yourself.
[ Keep Sims away from children, please. And because his intuition tells him Martin could probably stand to hear this... ]
I'm not holding you accountable for what he did.
And it doesn't seem fair to you that preventing him from doing these things should have to be your responsibility. But I also don't see any more viable options, unless the potion will be enough.
Did Arid respond to you?
[ Because she hasn't mentioned anything to him yet. That, too, worries him. ]
Maybe I'm not responsible, but I could have done more. After Arid was hurt, I could have reached out to her, to you, made sure she wasn't damaged irreparably by what he'd done. I could have kept a closer eye on him in the first place. I could have done a lot of things differently, and I wish I had because it's not me who was hurt. It was her.
I've offered, and she's agreed that it's best I don't contact her again unless it's about keeping her safe from Jon. I know I can't be her friend. It was probably stupid to try after what Jon did to her. Please take care of her, okay? Make sure she has people who love her and know she's important and it's okay to bend her rules sometimes.
She's coming by the house to say goodbye to the last of the forest robots. The one we saved from the orcs. They repaired themself while the dome was up and they've been cleaning away the glass. I think they're getting ready to go home, though. If you wanted to say goodbye, too.
Why didn't you reach out sooner, then? Because you didn't want to, or because you were busy dealing with the aftermath with Sims and ensuring it wouldn't happen to anyone else?
It may be that all you can do now is learn from the experience. I wish I'd been able to do more too. It's hard living with the knowledge I failed her when she needed me most. That I couldn't do a single thing to protect her, probably not even if I'd been there. But I intend to do everything I can to take care of her. She's been staying with me and Technical Boy.
[ It's as much to reassure Martin as it is himself. Saying it's "hard" coming to terms with having failed Arid is a woeful understatement; he's been reliving the encounter in his nightmares whenever he closes his eyes. Not from any supernatural influence exerted by Sims (presumably), but because of how traumatic it had been finding Arid kneeling and curled in on herself like that, the vital components of her suit destroyed by her own hand... And now knowing what it is that Sims did to her. K's barely equipped to handle his own trauma, but he's still determined to help Arid with hers, however he can. If he can. ]
You can still be Arid's friend by doing what you can to ensure Sims never violates her again.
I would like to check up on that robot we saved before they leave, so I'll come by too. Thanks for letting me know.
[ There's a brief pause here between messages, that if Martin's watching in real time he'll notice there's typing (and deleting) for several moments. The mention of the robot reminded K... and just knowing Martin may not have anyone other than Sims who might think to ask how he's feeling. ]
How have you been since that? The mess with the orcs and the robot. [ And Martin's breakdown. ] And now all of this.
[It's a terse answer, but Martin doesn't really have much else to say. He screwed up, and he needs to do better. That's about the sum total of it. He's not expecting much more from K, so when the next message comes through, Martin is a little surprised. It takes a while for an answer to come back.]
Jon's alive, so it's... better? I'm not so good when I don't have him, you know? A lot of people were really nice about it, but it's not quite the same.
There is something I'm a little worried about. For you... and everyone, honestly. Peter Lukas is in Deerington. He's the man who was in the video for my trial. I don't know what to do about him.
