Hi, KD6-3.7! It's Martin. Again. Sorry to bother you, but I had a question. I'm afraid a friend of mine got into an altercation with an AI. He's... incredibly rude and nosy at times. I wanted to talk to the AI and apologize on his behalf, maybe find out if there's some way to make things right and make sure they don't hurt him again. But he came home really badly injured, and he's worried if I talk to them, then I'll be attacked.
I think he's probably being overly paranoid, but I wanted to check if maybe you knew them and could say whether it would be safe? Jon wasn't able to get a name, but the description he gave me was that they were tall and humanoid with a matte black covering and glowing visor. Is that anyone you know here?
Hello, Martin. I'm sorry your friend was hurt. Is he all right now? You should know there's a hospital here and medical supplies are free.
I'm familiar with the AI in question. But that reaction sounds quite unlike her, if your friend was merely being abrasively inquisitive. [ And he isn't just defending Arid; he genuinely believes she'd be more likely to remove herself from the situation than wantonly attack someone for being rude. She'd told him she's striving for self-improvement, after all.
Little does he know... ]
I can't provide accurate advice without knowing the entire situation.
Hi, KD6-3.7. I wanted to ask if you eat organic food? I've been having a little trouble sleeping lately, and I've been on something of a baking kick to do something with the berries I've been picking in the forest. So... well, the short story is that I have two berry pies instead of one. I wanted to thank you for your help with Arid and I thought this might be a good way. If it's something you can eat, I've got half a pie with your designation on it. :)
If you don't eat, is there anything else you like?
[ This is a surprising message to receive after everything — he'd sort of thought Martin would take to avoiding him and Arid both, for Sims' sake if not for his own. What an unusual human. Is this... an overture of friendship? ]
That's kind of you to think of me. Thank you. I'm capable of eating organic food, yes.
Are you having difficulties adjusting to this place? Or is your sleep trouble unrelated?
You were DEAD? What happened? You're all right now?
[ Because WHAT THE HELL, FERN. After the initial shock and relief, K sends a follow-up: ]
I'm relieved to hear from you. And I'm sorry about all the messages. When you never responded and I couldn't find you anywhere, I thought
[ Well. His prior messages make it clear what he'd thought: that Fern was mad at him and must've decided to ditch him. Consequently he's been spending less time at Mr. Dearborn's home (it just — isn't the same, without Fern there too) and more at his own apartment and Tech Boy's place. ]
I've been worried the whole time. You just vanished. Really, what happened? I wish I could've helped you.
I was wondering if I could ask you a few things about Fern. In confidence. I know you're his friend, he's my friend too. But there's been a couple of things happened lately and I'm not really sure what to do.
What's happened? Is Fern all right? Or as all right as he can be, since he's refusing to wear shoes while the Betties are coating every sidewalk in herbicides.
[ Fern's stubbornness has him very worried. Then there's what he assumes is the most likely reason for Luna to be contacting him about Fern, which is equally as worrying... ]
[It doesn't take very long for Fern to send K a desperate message. He has no idea what he's doing, and right now K is literally the only one in town he can ask without feeling like a total loser.]
PLEASE tell me you're alive and not gone i need some help this nice robot Arid needs her body repaired and i volunteered to collect stuff for it she said you've been helping her too i got no clue what i should be looking for at the junkyard i don't even know what the junk i'm supposed to find are metals???
help i can't fail at this
[After this month he's desperate to do something that he won't fail at and won't make him a total monster.]
That's kind of you to help Arid, especially after what she's been through. And this will help save me considerable time that can be spent repairing her suit instead of scavenging, so I appreciate anything you can do.
If you're unsure about anything you come across, just send me a picture of it and I can probably tell you if it's needed or not.
[ Attached is a detailed list of every material that might conceivably be needed for repairing Arid's combat suit, as well as substitute materials in case the preferred ones can't be found (these are all noted so Fern won't waste his time collecting both), along with descriptions of everything that will hopefully enable him to identify it all. ]
I saw that you were also one of Jonathan Sims's victims. Are you all right now? This is the second time he has specifically targeted Arid. Given that precedent, he may try to do the same to you. Please be careful and let me know if you ever need help — with anything. I'll help you with no questions asked.
[ The latter being an important distinction to make, he feels, because it's Fern. If there ever comes another time when he's in a bad situation and doesn't know who he can turn to, hopefully he'll remember this. ]
Hi, K. I hope you've been as safe as you can be the past month.
I wanted to warn you that Jon is alive again. I've let Arid know, as well, and asked her what I can do to make her feel safer with him around. If there's anything I can do to make you feel safer, please let me know.
I'm so sorry for what he did to Arid. I had him drink a magic potion he'd been given by someone after he came home and told me he had it. It severely limited his powers. I don't know if it's still effective after he's come back, but I can talk to him about it.
How is it that you still feel safe around him, Martin? When he's made it abundantly clear he cannot be trusted to control himself, in any capacity. Not even around children.
[ K considers mentioning how terrified Fern has seemed after what Sims did to him, but decides against going into specifics. The trials were all public, but Fern's feelings had been shared with him in confidence. Martin isn't the one who should be shamed, anyway, and he assumes it's unlikely Sims is ever going to reach out to make amends or accept responsibility for his actions. Especially not with Arid — and probably that's for the best. He hopes Sims stays the hell away from her from now on.
What a nightmare this has been. ]
What happens when you run out of the potion. Will more people be violated? Will he turn on you next?
[ These aren't rhetorical questions. He's worried. ]
[ There's a drowsy hum from the other side of the bed and the telltale sound of a Fluid being activated. A few moments later Tech Boy will feel fingers gently slipping through his hair, gathering it and freeing it from the confines of his blanket burrito. Hopefully he doesn't mind having his hair played with, because that's exactly what K proceeds to do while texting back with his other hand.
Look. Texting while in the same room, while in the same bed might be weird, but it's the sort of weirdness he doesn't mind indulging — and it doubles as worship, a nice bonus. Just comes with the territory when romantically involved with a technology god, he figures. ]
Morning, darling. [ Speak now or forever hold your peace if you don't like the pet name, TB. ]
My shivering woke me. It seems someone has cruelly taken all the blankets.
[There is a box with a note left in K's mailbox or outside his front door, if he doesn't have one. It contains a note from Martin along with three items: a patch, a brooch, and a keychain.]
Dear K,
Jon and I are working with Varian on alchemizing more of the potion to keep Jon safe, but I'm not sure how long it will take him or if the potion will wear off of Jon soon. I asked Sodder for help, and she sent a few things to me. When you're wearing them, they should limit or block out Jon's Beholding powers. And Elias' come to think on it. I'm not sure the extent of their effectiveness, but I asked for something to shield you as completely as she can.
The patch is for Arid. I've seen her wearing her sleeper scout sash around and thought she might want a special patch that no one else can earn.
The brooch is for you. I thought it would be cute.
The keychain is for Technical Boy. I know he's your friend and I thought it might be something he'd like.
[ Admittedly, K's first thought is that a young child must have forgotten their art project in the hallway. When it remains unclaimed for a couple days, he eventually brings it inside and it becomes the curious new centerpiece of his kitchen table. It's only after further consideration that he realises it may very well have been intended for him — by a certain artist whose style only seems childish...
K does still have those drawings he'd found at Ben's place. Regardless of their demonic origin, they serve as a fond reminder of what it was like having a family of sorts for a little while. And it's strangely touching to think Paimon has perhaps given him this googly-eyed gift.
A few days after the demonic art project was delivered, Paimon (or more likely Peter) may notice an ornament that's been left hanging near the front door of Peter's home. It's comprised of gold wire that's been delicately twisted into the shape of Paimon's sigil (at least according to one of the demonology books from the library), and there's an attached note: ]
In early October, a gift will be left on their doorstep, or in their mailbox. There's a bottle of something called 'Firewhisky', wrapped in silvery paper and placed in a giftbag. There is a note from Luna which reads the following:
Dear K,
I thought you might like a bottle of Firewhiskey, a drink from my home. I've heard it does cause a little burning sensation when drunk, but it's said to fill one with courage. Sláinte!
[ Not long after, Luna will be greeted by a rabbit sculpture perched on her porch, with an envelope containing a note pinned to one ear by some wire. It's something K had started sometime back with Luna in mind, but only recently put the finishing touches on it. (And if Paimon has kept the camel K made for him, Luna may realise who it came from now.)
The note reads: ]
Luna-
Thank you for the gift, that was very kind of you.
I'm curious about what other sorts of drinks your homeworld has, if you wouldn't mind telling me about them? Do you have a favourite? I operate a pub and have been thinking it would be interesting to stock unique drinks from others' homeworlds. They don't have to be alcoholic, of course.
Hey, KD. Long time no talk. I was wondering you said awhile back that if I went into business that you'd help me out with some advertising. I kind of flip flopped on it for a few months but I decided I was going to give it a go. Just wanted to check if that offer was still open.
Of course the offer still stands. I saw your notice on the network about it — I'm glad you've decided to do it. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.
[ Holidays aren't exactly relevant to his brand of demon, but Paimon's curiosity and desire to learn have had him very interested in what's going on with this. When he learned it was a time of giving, it's definitely been on his radar. Maintaining his bonds with others in this place is extremely important for him; he often bestows little gifts to people. Now here's a time designated for that.
He's been practicing his art, and he's evolved to making more detailed miniatures again (something a past self used to do.....) Delivered sometime on the 25th, left on the porch, is a figure:
The little doll is very intricately made, comprised of different pieces and parts of random things he's been collecting over time, glued and fastened together. Of all people, he thinks K will appreciate this sort of thing, and he's quite excited to give it to him. He chooses an animal, a creature, like K had made him once. Happy Holidays, Thoughtful Android Friend. 👑 ]
[On the 25th K will find a gift has been left outside his door! According to the tag it's from Fern, and inside the meticulously wrapped package is a decoratively carved skull.
My name is Mako. We haven’t spoken before. Ruby put your name forward as someone who might be willing to keep a cache of food stocked in your home. We can’t be sure that the dream is going to hold together, or that the usual food sources will be reliable for much longer. If you’re willing, I have a list of the basics that you’d need.
It's a sound idea and I'm happy to be of assistance in this matter. Send me the list. I'm the proprietor of the Deerington Public House on Crimson Drive — which has served as a refuge in prior months to Sleepers in need, and I've maintained the practise of stockpiling extra supplies there. You may also direct Sleepers there and come yourself if the need for a safe haven arises again. Or just come for a drink, of course.

Dear K,
Jon and I are working with Varian on alchemizing more of the potion to keep Jon safe, but I'm not sure how long it will take him or if the potion will wear off of Jon soon.
Best,
Martin K. Blackwood
